About the Glaze Calculator

The KPA Glaze Calculator is a program for converting the recipe of a glaze into a formula. The box below displays the program on the right, and some instructions on the left. It may help you to make your browser window as wide as possible so you can see both at the same time.

The program will take a few seconds to initialise, so please be patient. At the bottom of the page is more information about the program for those who are interested, a chance for you to send us your feedback and suggestions, and some troubleshooting advice if it doesn't seem to be working.

How to use the Glaze Calculator

Click on the "drop down" arrow to the right of the material selector and click on the material you want to use. The usual basic materials are in the list, but it is not possible to include all the different frits available worldwide, so in that case pick the one you think is closest. Enter the quantity in the "Parts" box - this can be in any unit as long as the units you use for all the materials is the same. They do not need to add up to 100. Click the "Update Recipe" button. Repeat these steps until your recipe appears complete in the list area.

If you need to change the quantity of any ingredient you can click on it in the list area, and the name and quantity will be copied back to the entry area, where you can update it and then click "Update Recipe" again. To delete a material completely, select it in your recipe by clicking on it, and then click the "Delete Material" button.

When your recipe is complete, you can press the "Recipe to Formula" button at the bottom of the window, and you should see the recipe converted to the usual unity formula representation in the lower half of the window.

If the glaze calculator doesn't appear here then your browser cannot work with Java applets.

More information about the Glaze Calculator, by Mike Evans

The Glaze Calculator is a Java Program written for use by members of the Kent Potter's Association and users of this web page. The program is provided with no guarantees, and no-one I can think of will accept any kind of liability for faults it may have. However if you do discover a fault - do get in touch I will see what can be done.

The program is written following the method for Calculating Batch to Formula given by Susan Peterson in her book The Complete Pottery Course (Published by Elbury Press 1992, ISBN 0-09-177003-3. Published in North and South America by Prentice Hall Inc. under the title The Craft and Art of Clay.)

The calculator does not currently calculate in the other direction. If enough people are keen to have one, and I have the time, I am happy to have a go at writing one. Susan Peterson does give a method in her book. However she does not make any allowance for Loss on Ignition, which I believe should be accounted for. Perhaps someone can recommend a suitable approach.

I hope you enjoy using the program, and that your glazes all work! - Mike.
