Kent Potter's Association Karen Wood Lecture

Karen Wood, 12 November 1999

Karen Ann Wood is a member of the Kent Potter's Association. She has written a book called Tableware in Clay (Published by The Crowood Press Ltd ISBN 1 86126 198 5).

In this lecture Karen gave us an hilarious account of how (not!) to go about writing a book, and why she should never have done it in the first place, but might now consider doing it again! She also spoke eloquently about the history of tableware in clay, and illustrated some of the ways that this craft of the poor and often disenfranchised informs the work of modern studio potters.

The Book is illustrated with many photographs, of both ancient and modern tableware.

A not very flattering photo (Sorry Karen!) of Karen, showing us the detail of an old English lead-glazed jug.

A Yi Xing teapot which Karen brought with her to illustrate her talk.

One of Karen's own pieces, showing onglaze brushwork with oxides on stoneware glaze.

During the evening we were all able to admire, and handle, the pieces that Karen brought with her to illustrate her talk.
