Kent Potter's Association Jim Robison Master Day

Jim Robison Master Day, 9 October 1999

Jim Robison is an American who now lives in Yorkshire. He draws on the textures and patterns of the landscape there for much of the inspiration of his work. A fair amount of that work has been large scale sculptural and mural work, and he showed us some of this in a slide show. He demonstrated many of his slab building techniques, and below is a selection of photographs taken during the day.

Jim combined slabs of clay some of which were decorated with slip and textured or cut. He then carefully ran them through his ancient mangle.

The resulting textured slab

The slabs were laid in wooden formers to give the curve and then assembled onto a base. Here, the formers have been removed, showing the paper which prevented them sticking.

Ta daaa! - all is revealed.

"Enough for today." The pot still has the wooden battens in, which help stabilise it during the drying process.
