Kent Potters Association Picture Gallery - Helen Komatsu

Helen Komatsu

My work is inspired by the many fascinating qualities of clay, the material itself being my major source of my inspiration. I am attracted to both natural and man-made patterns that repeat themselves on large and small scales. I like to use pattern in unexpected ways, enhanced through the use of oxides, stains and slips. My aim is to bring out, but not mask, the form, patterns and textures I have achieved in the building.

Some of my pieces are modelled realistically, other are more stylised. I combine slab construction, modelling, pinching, piercing, extruding, sprigging and stamping. All my pieces are individual; every work must be an adventure.

I grew up in New York, and have also lived in Madrid and the Middle East. In 1996, I co-founded the business and writing consultancy Da Vinci Public Relations, which I run in partnership, though only part time these days as my main priority is making art. I live in the countryside near Ash, Canterbury and work out of a chalet in my garden which I have converted into a studio and pottery. I am currently studying at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) Canterbury, for a BA (Hons) in Fine Art.

I recommend this Matt Majolica glaze from the The Potter's Dictionary of Materials and Techniques, which I find quite un-putdown-able. See also my personal site at www.helenkomatsu.co.uk
