Doris Mitchell

Doris contemplated a career in pottery while making that first and last ashtray at school in Heidelberg in Germany. Wondering where all those tourists in town came from, got sidetracked into becoming an air hostess. Met this Englishman and got sidetracked again, this time into marriage. Moved to Switzerland, France, Belgium, Germany, back to England, having tried pottery evening classes in most places.

Lidded boxes
7 - 30 cm high

Finally got down to "serious" pottery by getting a BA in Ceramics at Ravensbourne College of Art & Design in 1986. Set up own workshop, sold work through galleries in England and Germany, made no money. Got sidetracked again, into designing fitted kitchens, this time very well paid.

"What's money?" she said, gave up fitted kitchens, set up a workshop again in 1997 and has been making porcelain pots ever since. At the moment an exploration of the endless variations possible of bottle and bowl shapes is taking place without much sidetracking.

Experimenting with glazes plays a major role and there are plenty of ruined kiln shelves to prove it. Pots are reduction fired in a 12 ft3 gas kiln and sold through galleries in the south and at craft fairs.

Doris' porcelain glaze is given in the glaze database
